Storm Francis to bring strong winds and heavy rain
A deep area of low pressure will cross the UK from Monday night, bringing wind gusts of 60 mph and potentially 70 mph in exposed western locations and also heavy rain for many. A yellow wind warning is in force for the whole of Wales and most of England until midday on Wednesday.
Whilst not exceptional, winds this strong are unusual for August and they will be accompanied by some heavy rain in places, with possible transport disruption and impacts on outdoor activities. Large waves are also expected in coastal areas around the South West including the Bristol Channel, throughout Tuesday, moving along the English Channel as the day progresses. Beachgoers are advised to take extra care.
The rain is expected to be heaviest in Northern Ireland and south west Scotland where 60-90 mm in total could fall as the storm moves from west to east.
Storm Francis will clear to the East of the UK by Wednesday lunchtime, leaving a brighter and more settled outlook for the remainder of the day.

Storm Ellen
Following on from last week's heatwave, much of the UK can expect a spell of wet and windy weather as Storm Ellen sweeps north across Ireland on Wednesday night before dominating the weather for the rest of the week.
Met Eireann named Storm Ellen on Tuesday evening, as the unseasonably, deep Atlantic low-pressure system brings the potential for impacts to the Republic of Ireland.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Steve Ramsdale said: 'Following the recent hot and thundery weather we are seeing a significant change to very unsettled conditions for August with an unseasonal spell of strong winds associated with low-pressure centres for the second half of the week'.
'Uncertainty remains high in the intensity of these systems at this point, but we are confident in the change to a spell of much windier weather. Tropical air associated with a decayed tropical cyclone is being drawn towards the UK, and the marked contrast between this warm and moist air with normal North Atlantic airmasses can lead to a very vigorous system.'
The Met Office has issued a wind warning for western parts of the UK from 8.00pm on Wednesday until 23:59pm on Thursday. Strong winds are forecast for this area (East Midlands/East Anglia) throughout Friday.
From 13/08/20 08:40 to 13/08/20 12:00.

Interruption of web service. Sun sensor under reporting - now cleaned.
At around 17:00 it was noticed that the sunshine hours reading was unexpectedly low. Mast brought down to clean the sensor and on restoration, it was noticed that the station had not been reporting to the web since 16:10. Investigation revealed that the network connection had failed and the lan drivers were reinstalled, and router/switch rebooted to restore connection. No data lost but a couple of readings between 18:00 and 18:30 are corrupt due to the mast being at ground level.

Station now reporting in UK Local time (previous change backed out).
The weather station hardware uses a real time clock, capturing the radio signal from DCF in Germany, which DOES automatically adjust for Daylight Saving Time (DST). The station remains in synchronism with the logger but has a hole from 1am to 2am in Spring and duplicates from 1am to 2am in the Autumn. Some further research needed to identify how to handle this. These anomalies are consistently in the data since Spring 2012.

Storm Jorge
Thousands of homes and businesses were flooded as areas were deluged by more than a month's worth of rainfall in just 24 hours, while some 127,000 properties were protected by flood defences this winter, authorities said. Some 15 rivers in the Midlands, Yorkshire and Lancashire recorded their highest levels on record and the Environment Agency warned the country needs to brace itself for "more frequent periods of extreme weather like this" because of climate change. As this storm was named by the Spanish Meteorological service, details are available (in Spanish) at http://www.aemet.es/es/portada

Data glitches due to low transmitter battery. Battery replaced. Glitches not yet removed.
Whilst the transmitter is accessed for battery change, the temperature, wind speed and direction measurements are temporarliy incorrect. The station is dropped by approximately 5m, gravity turns the weather vane to the East and the anemometer is shielded. Rainfall may be incorrectly recorded as a result of testing the sensor or by mast vibration.

Station offline whilst OS upgraded to Windows 10. No data lost.
The station computer was upgraded to Windows10 from Windows 7, necessitating a reinstallation of Cumulus. During this time, support for the website ceased, freezing the displays. The weather station console continued to buffer data and the new software installation picked up the backlog seamlessly.
